A captivating new art installation is set to grace downtown Plattsburgh as the Strand Center for the Arts unveils "Eloquent Visions: Honoring the Rich Tapestry of Black Artistry." This exhibition, featuring the works of seven distinct creators, promises a journey through vibrant narratives and evocative expressions. One of the featured artists, Elizabeth Marques, presents a compelling narrative through her paintings and sculptures, which depict the royal kingdoms of ancient Africa. Marques passionately underscores the importance of remembering this often-overlooked aspect of history, aiming to educate viewers through her creations."It was a very widely respected type of culture over there. And now that it has been sort of disbanded over the years and centuries, people tend to forget. So, I would like to bring it back into the forefront," Marques said.The exhibition showcases a diverse array of artistic mediums, from traditional paintings and sculptures to 2-D works and mixed media installations. Some pieces will be available for purchase, while others will remain on display exclusively at the Strand Art Gallery. Winosha Steele, an artist originally from the Caribbean who now works at the Strand, emphasizes the significance of showcasing such work, particularly during Black History Month."I do feel like it’s important to showcase that there are people of color here and more than you may think. And we are creative, and we are expressive, and our art shows more than meet the eye," Steele said.Thomas Greene, another participating artist who recently established his tattoo parlor in downtown Plattsburgh, hopes his abstract works will contribute to raising awareness and appreciation for art in Northern New York."I think it’s important for small communities like this to raise more respect and awareness for kids in the North Country who actually want to go to art school and want their art to be appreciated on a higher level," Greene said.The artists involved in "Eloquent Visions" aspire not only to garner interest in their work but also to ignite meaningful conversations among visitors."I really hope that people encourage more people to come. And I hope that they ask questions and not hold their tongue because they are afraid of like offending or anything like that," Steele said.Marques echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the desire for inclusion and recognition within their community."We just want inclusion.
